Fruit Kebabs

As part of our DT, the children designed and made their own fruit kebabs. The children learnt to use knifes safely to chop the fruit and then put it safely on to the kebab stick. Once they had designed it they ate it and then evaluated it.

During our geography lessons, we have been learning about the weather. We used our knowledge to create weather forecasts for the UK.

Our Toys Have Quit!

On Monday, the children arrived at school to discover their toys had quit. The toys wrote a letter to explain how they felt and complain about how they have been treated by the children. In English, the children wrote a letter to the toys to persuade them to come back and apologise for how they treated them.

Trip to Mountfitchet Castle and Toy Museum

On Tuesday, Year 1 went to visit Mountfitchet Castle. They were able to walk around and explore different parts of the motte and bailey castle and further understand what life was like in medieval times. After lunch, the children then visited a toy museum and looked at toys from the past.

Christmas Party

As part of our topic 'What makes me a me?' the children in Year 1 have been learning about portraits and self-portraits. In our art lesson, they used clay to make a self-portrait.

Choosing our library books

This week, the children in Year 1 visited the library areas outside their classroom. They chose a book to share with their families at home. These books need to be returned to school on a Monday and the children will bring a new book home.

In Art this term we have been learning all about using tone and shade to create depth and interest in our pictures. This week we extended a photo of a dragon's eye, using shape and tone that we could see in the picture.

In English, this week, we have been learning about non-chronological reports. The children worked collaboratively to explore the features of the reports and put the pieces back together.

Repurpose day

This week, the children across school have taken part in a repurpose day. They have learnt about ways they can save energy as well. As part of the repurpose day, the children in Freedman class made dragon pencil holders using toilet roll tubes and egg cartons. In Donaldson class, the children made tea light holders out of old tin cans.

Christmas Fun

During the last week of the autumn term, the children in Year 1 took part in lots of different Christmas activities. On Wednesday, they made some Christmas crafts with their grown ups, enjoyed their Christmas lunch, followed by watching a pantomime and were very lucky to be visited by Santa, who delivered some Christmas presents. On Thursday, the children enjoyed their Christmas party and on Friday, the children had a visit to the theatre.

Meeting Miya

During our last week of the Autumn term, the children in year 1 spent some time meeting Miya. They were able to throw a ball for her to chase and catch and then spent some time stroking her.

Higgins Toy Museum

On Wednesday, we visited the Higgins Museum in Bedford. The children further developed their knowledge of the history of toys by taking part in some workshops. The children had a lovely time and were able to write a recount about their experience in English.

Puppet Workshop

Dance

The children in Year 1 have enjoyed spending time in our under the sea library area. During our time in the library area, they chose a book to share at home with their families. These will be changed every Monday in Freedman class and every Friday in Donaldson class.

Our Summer Dance

Gold learner badge

On Friday, Freedman had their first gold learner badge! The children work hard showing the learning behaviours to earn house points and Amina is the first person to earn 300 house points and she received her gold learner badge in celebration assembly. Well done Amina!

Recognising fractions

In maths the children have been learning about fractions. As part of their learning they have been recognising and sorting fractions into halves and whole.

As part of our learning in DT, this half term, the children have been learning about fruit and vegetables. This week, they finished off their learning by designing and making a fruit kebab. They used their previous learning, followed their plan, prepared the fruit and chopped the fruit to the specified size.

Queen's Jubilee Picnic

On Tuesday, the children enjoyed a picnic lunch with all of their friends to celebrate the Queen's jubilee. The rainy weather meant we had to have our lunch in the hall. The children also had a photograph, sang some songs and have completed lots of different activities to celebrate her jubilee.
