Whipsnade Zoo

Year 2 visited Whipsnade Zoo this week. We were so excited to go on the bus and couldn't believe our eyes when we saw that it was a double decker! When we got to the zoo, we saw lots of different animals; including penguins, cheetahs, hippos and rhinos. After lunch, we went on the steam train which was our favourite part!

Dips and dippers!

In DT this week, we made dips and dippers! We started the day by tasting different dips and thinking about what flavours we could taste. We also tried different dippers. In the afternoon, we made our own dips! We had to read the recipes carefully and use our cutting skills. We loved our grown ups coming into the classroom to try our dips!

Fire engine fun!

Stopsley Fire Service visited Year 2 this week. They taught us about how to keep safe around fires and how to get help if we notice a fire. We learnt how to 'stop, drop and roll' if our clothes are on fire. We also got to see the fire engine and squirt the hose!

To celebrate our learning about Paddington this half term, Year 2 had a tea party! We tried marmalade sandwiches which are Paddington's favourite!

Shapes

In Year 2 this week, the children are learning about shapes. They have identified and named 2D and 3D shapes. In our journaling lesson, the children were finding ways to sort 2D shapes. Some children grouped them by the number of sides and vertices they had. Ask your children to spot 2D and 3D shapes in the environment around them!

In Science this half term, Year 2 have been learning about properties of materials. We carried out an investigation to see if we could bend, twist, stretch or squash different objects.

Super Science!

In Year 2, we are learning about plants. We have explored the difference between seeds and bulbs and even had a go at planting some! The children have all taken home a pot with seeds in and a seed diary to record their observations. We also planted bulbs which should grow at the beginning of next year. The children are excited to see what they will be!

The children in Year 2 have made a fantastic start to the year! They have settled into new routines and are embracing new responsibilities in their classrooms. The teachers have been especially impressed by their independence which is our Learning Behaviour for this half term! African Animals

Year 2 loved having African animals visit Stopsley school this week. We got to touch or hold the animals depending on how brave we were feeling! The animals we learnt about included a snake, cockroach, bearded dragon and meerkats. Ask your children to tell you their favourite animal!

In Year 2 this week, the children have been cooking! We tasted different types of biscuits to see which were our favourites and decided to make chocolate chip cookies. The children had to weigh out the ingredients and mix them together before they could be cooked. The best part was tasting our creations!

Whipsnade Zoo

Last week, the children in Year 2 went on their first school trip to Whipsnade zoo. They had a fantastic time seeing all of the animals and learning new facts about them. The children loved playing in the playground, too!

Fire Fire!

Year 2 had a visit from Stoplsey Fire Service this week. The children enjoyed hearing about the job that firefighters do and learnt lots of important ways to keep themselves and their families safe from fire. They had a tour of the fire engine and even got to use the fire hose! The children had a fantastic time!

This week the children in Year 2 went to the park to celebrate their hard work during their tests. The children loved running around, climbing on the castle and playing in the sand. The teachers had fun going down the slides, too! The children have been working so hard and thoroughly deserved a fun afternoon! The adults at school are so proud of them all!

Stopsley Village

On Tuesday, the children in Year 2 went for a walk around the village. The children were very excited as this was their first time leaving the school! We explored the village to identify important landmarks that we could include in our own maps. Ask the children what they saw!

World Book Day

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, the children in Year 2 created their own Mr Men and Little Miss books. The children enjoyed learning about the different characters and made up stories that suited their personalities.

Mr Grinling's Icecream

In Science, Year 2 have been testing which material would be best to make Mr Grinling's lunchbox from. We have learnt what an insulator is and used our knowledge to make predictions about which material would keep Mr Grinling's ice cream coldest for longest!

Money, money, money!

In Maths, Year 2 have been learning about money. We have been looking at the different coins and notes. We have learnt all about the value of each coin and are able to compare different amounts to say which one has the greatest value. We have been using the bar model and part-whole model to add and subtract amounts of money. Next time you are at the shops, ask us to make the amount you need!

Sandwiches for Mr Grinling!

The children had a great time making sandwiches for Mr. Grinling! Mr. Grinling is the main character in the story 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch' and seagulls kept stealing his lunch. So that he wouldn't be hungry whilst doing such an important job, the children in Year 2 made him some sandwiches! They worked in pairs; one person giving the instructions and the other person making the sandwich. This will lead us to writing instructions later this week and next. Watch this space for some fantastic writing!

Today many children received their certificates and medals for their amazing attendance this year. Many children had 100% attendance this year. What a fantastic achievement! We are all very proud of the children.

Following Instructions

For the start of our learning on instructions the children in Matisse class worked with their learning partner to give instructions to draw flowers and houses and make different models using lego and mobilo. Their partner then had to follow the instructions. The children learnt the importance of giving precise instructions, so they could be successful.

Playtime Fun!

At playtime this week, the children decided to make an obstacle course together. They arranged the tyres and the crates into a long line. They practised different ways to travel along it. They stepped through the tyres, walked along the top of them and travelled on all fours.

Journey through Africa

As an introduction to our topic Out of Africa, the children went on a journey through Africa. On their journey, the children identified a range of African rivers, trees and animals before reaching an African market where they were able to see different fruits and ingredients as well as African patterns. The children collected all the vocabulary, which they will use within their writing this half term.

As part of our learning on healthy eating in PSHE this week, the children have designed their own healthy sandwich. They then followed their designs and made the sandwich.

The Great Fire of London

As part of our learning on The Great Fire of London, the children learnt about how Tudor houses were made. They worked in groups to make their own Tudor house. The houses were then set on fire and the children learnt about why the fire spread so quickly.

Athletics Festival

The children in Year 2 took part in an athletics festival this week. They took part in a variety of activities in their houses and competed with the other houses.

Reading detectives!

Today the children in Year 2 became reading detectives. The children had to find clues and make inferences to help them find our more information about the Great Fire of London.

Dance! Dance! Dance

The children in Year 2 enjoyed their first dance lesson with Katie this week. They learnt to count beats in the music, practised a dance routine and added their own dance moves to it while keeping in time with the music.
