Sustainable Cities

This half-term, we have been learning about sustainable cities. We researched three different sustainable cities in the world and identified features. We focused on energy, transport, food, waste and green spaces. The children then worked in small groups to design their own city.

Dance

We have been practising our dance for the last term and we are now getting nearer to our final performance. We have been practising hard and have now learnt the whole dance. On Wednesday 10th July, we will be wearing bright tops and dark bottoms and making our very own dance video to showcase all of our hard work.

Ancient Egyptian trip

Year 3 visited the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford this week to learn more about the Ancient Egyptians. We took part in an Egypt detectives workshop to learn more about what life was like for the Ancient Egyptians. We got to see lots artefacts and even got to hold some.

Bread making

This week, we had a DT day in which we got to sample and evaluate different types of bread. We then looked at different shapes of bread and created our own design. After that, we worked as a team to measure our ingredients to make our bread.

Farm Visit

As part of our learning this half term, we had a visit from Ark Farm. The children enjoyed learning what animals need to help them survive and how their skeletons are different. Children got to have some hands on experience.

Weird and Wonderful Creatures

As part of our Global Goals week, we looked at animal skeletons and identified which animals they belong to. We then used parts of animal skeletons to create our own animals. Children had a lot of fun doing this.

Healthy eating

In PSHE this half term, we have been learning about making healthy choices. One of our activities was to identify which snacks were healthy and which were unhealthy.

Stone Age Workshop

To end our learning on Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, we took part in a whole-day workshop. The children had the chance to handle artefacts such as a mammoth rib, seal skin and bronze tools. Our guest speaker was very informative and told us lots of fantastic facts.

Computing

This half term, children have been learning about ways of communicating with each other. As part of this, they have learnt to receive and send emails. Children have also discussed how to keep themselves and others safe whilst emailing.

Stone Age

This week in History, the children had an introduction to Stone Age. They learnt about cave paintings and Stone Age jewellery. They also had a chance to design and create their own.

Platinum Winner!

A huge well done to Bianca who is the school's first ever Platinum certificate winner! Bianca is clearly an amazing role model for other children. She has collected 400 House Points this year to surpass the Bronze Learner, Silver Learner and Gold Learner badges. Bianca was presented her certificate and prize in the KS2 Governor Awards assembly this afternoon.

This week Year 3 went to Ashmolean Museum. The children had an amazing time looking at and learning further about Ancient Egypt. It was amazing seeing mummies and handling some artefacts from back in time.

This half term, children have enjoyed our topic on magnets. We enjoyed looking at different types of magnets and comparing them to each other. Children then used the magnets to investigate which one would hold the most magnets.

Bread Making

To end our topic on 'Field to Fork,' we spent the day doing a DT project on bread making. We started the morning with finding out the history of Warburtons, where we learnt many interesting facts. Once this was done, we tasted a variety of their bread, some bread we didn't know existed! After that, we designed and labelled our bread and then used a recipe to make it. To finish our learning, we evaluated our bread.

Stick Drumming

The focus in our music lessons this half term is drumming. Children have had the opportunity to learn different rhythms and are beginning to use these skills to play alongside popular songs.

Christmas Crafts

Over the last few weeks, children enjoyed learning the key features of instruction writing. To end their unit every child wrote a set of instructions for making a tealight snowman. These instructions were then used by the adults who attended the Year 3 Christmas craft morning. Some amazing tealight snowmen were made! Thank you to all the adults who attended.

Volcanoes

During the last few weeks, children have been learning about volcanoes. To end our topic the children in each class were asked to work collaboratively as a table group to design and make a volcano using a variety of resources and skills. Once the volcanoes were made, the children made a volcanic eruption by using vinegar, fairy liquid and bicarbonate of soda. We all enjoyed watching the eruptions and some were bigger than others.

French Day

Year 3 have enjoyed their first half term learning French. To end the term we participated in a whole school French day. The children enjoyed tasting food and doing a variety of activities.

What a great start to our year! We have enjoyed our parents coming in on a Friday morning to share a book with the children. It has been lovely to see so many parents and children enjoying this activity.

Sustainable Cities

This week we took our learning outside. The children have been learning about sustainable cities in their topic lessons. Children learnt about important factors that need to be considered for a sustainable city and then looked in more detail at some of these cities. Once all the information was gathered, children worked in their table groups to play, design and make their own sustainable city.

Growing and Planting

Over the last few weeks, children in year 3 have had lots of fun learning about plants. On our first lesson, children walked into their classrooms to find a crime scene. Children quickly identified a plant had been murdered! This was a great way to start learning about parts of a plant and if plants were living objects.

Our trip to the British Museum

Last week, children and staff in Year 3 enjoyed a lovely day in London. We went to the British Museum to see the Egyptian artefacts. Children were amazed to see the mummies and the tombs. We also managed to see artefacts from Africa, clocks and watches and money from around the world.

Rights and Responsibilities

In our PSHE lessons this half term, we have been learning about rights and responsibilities. Across the year group we had discussions on children's rights and then compared them to rights of adults. We understood that human rights help make the world a better place - this helps people to be treated fairly to live a happily and fulfilled life.

Benin Art

This half-term our topic was Kingdom of Benin. As part of their topic children had the opportunity to look at a range of artefacts related to Benin. Pupils designed, made and evaluated their bronze plaques. The work taken place is engraving, and carving the plaques was amazing.

Bread Making

Children enjoyed learning all about bread. The day started by tasting a variety of breads from around the world. They then moved onto using the internet to research which countries particular breads came from. All children then worked collaboratively to follow a recipe to make bread dough. Once this was done, plans were used to make their bread shape. The kitchen kindly baked our breads for us to eat.

Stick Drumming

Every Friday morning, Year 3 have a music specialist come into school to do stick drumming. Children are learning to read and play rhythmic pieces as a class. This is a fun end to the week where all children and adults enjoy joining in.

Christmas Fun

This week Year 3 parents and children enjoyed a Christmas craft morning at school. Children in Year 3 had written instructions in their English lessons on how to make a tealight snowman. These instructions were followed to make some amazing snowmen. The hall was full of fun and creativity.

Stopsley Village

This month Year 3 had a field trip around Stopsley Village. The aim for this trip was to have a closer look at the environment and to identify why we might have certain things like shops and road signs. On our walk we saw many new things and places we had never stopped and looked at before. When we returned to school we all drew a map of the village and used a key to show others what we have in our local environment.

Cave Writing

In year 3, children came into school to discover their classrooms were turned into caves. During the morning they used their plans to write a story using a historic setting. After writing their stories they edited their work to make it better and rewrote. All the stories went into a class book for all the children to read.

Diversity

Children in Year 3 have been learning about similarities and differences within people. We identified how people in our school are all unique and how we learn so much from each other. Children also discussed feelings and respecting people around us. Children finished the lesson by working in groups to make posters on diversity.

Egyptian Fun!

To end our topic on Egyptians, children and staff all came to school dressed up as Egyptians. The day was spent learning about mummification, writing in hieroglyphics and designing, making and evaluating a headdress. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Bread Making

This half-term our topic 'Field to Fork' has made us think how the food we eat gets to our plates. We found out some foods are imported to us and there are foods we export to other countries around the world. To end our topic we spent a day finding out about different types of breads and tasting some. We also designed and made bread in our classrooms.

Ukuleles

Children have really enjoyed learning to play the ukuleles this half term with Mrs Knight. The first thing they learnt was the importance of holding a ukulele properly in order to get the best sound and to be comfortable when playing. They have also learnt to strum and pluck the strings and play along to a piece of music.

Art inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe

Over the last few weeks children have been learning about a famous artist Georgia O'Keefe. They began the mini topic by looking at and discussing some of her drawing. Children used a variety of media and skills to draw and paint flowers. They also learnt lots about colour mixing and use of space.

Geography in the UK

Year 3 have been studying Geography in the UK. To finish the topic we asked all the children to focus on one physical or geographical feature of one of the four nations. Rainbow class made their features out of clay. We had some amazing sculptures from the Principality Stadium, Ben Nevis, Big Ben and an old English village. Everyone really enjoyed the afternoon.

An Eruption of Fun!

This half term the children have been learning about volcanoes. They started the topic by watching a volcanic eruption and discussing what they could see and hear. This topic was also linked with our science learning on rocks. The children enjoyed learning how volcanoes are formed and then as classes, we watched a model volcano erupt!

Stone Age

This half term children have been learning about the Stone Age. Children have enjoyed learning about the story UG and then rewriting it changing parts to make it their own. Topic lessons were particularly enjoyed by the year group where they learnt about how people lived back then. Children were fascinated by cave paintings and spent some time pretending they were in caves to draw and paint a variety of pictures.

Children in year 3 have been having great fun every Friday morning in Music. They have been lucky enough to work with Mrs Fromow, a music specialist to learn to play the boomwhackers. Children have worked as a class to read music to the song 'The Grand Old Duck of York' and play their boomwhackers when it is their turn. They have all realised that it is important to read notes but also listen to others around them.

Year 3 had a WILD time when Safari Stu visited and showed them lots of amazing animals. They loved finding out all about all the animals he brought along and finding out where they live in the wild. They also got the chance to hold lots of them, including: cockroaches, snakes, a tortoise, a chameleon and many more! The children were so amazing, interested and knowledgable that we think we could have some budding naturalists on our hands!
