We also made biscuits from a World War 2 recipe, learnt 'We will Meet Again' and designed a propaganda poster. The children have really enjoyed this topic in history.

Spring term has seen year 5 working on dance and drumming. It has been great to see the children expressing themselves and we have been so proud to see them taking themselves out of their comfort zones. This has culminated in performances this week of both their final dance and their drumming performance. They did brilliantly in both performances and the videos will be posted online so you can see just how well they have done. A massive thank you to Billy from Luton Music Services and Katie for their work over this term. We hope you all have a great break and we will see you all for the summer term.

Every child left with a new book and they were so excited to get reading. We also had a classroom swap where teachers from around the school came to class to share their favourite stories. A lovely day was had by all!

We have cut and painted them to create plant pots and as soon as the weather improves we will be filling them with soil and planting some seeds. This links to our work in science on life cycles, as well as creating a perfect opportunity to grow plants which help climate change by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. Win-win. Watch this space to see how our plants grow...

Dressing up as evacuees helped the children immerse themselves in the experience and they had lots of fantastic questions for our visiting expert. The children found out all about life for soldiers during the war, including having a chance to hold the kit soldiers would have been expected to carry. A highlight of the day was getting the chance to be real life code breakers and having a go at the buzz wire game!

This half-term, the children are looking forward to finding out all about the 'Romans in Britain' and will be writing historical biographies.

There was so much to see and do, including a planetarium show, interactive displays and a life-size rocket. The children loved interacting with all the different activities and finding out lots of space facts. We discovered that gravity is so strong on the sun that none of us would be able to lift a can of beans! It was a real whirlwind of a day but we learnt a lot and had a lot of fun!

This half-term we started a new topic in English, which was called 'A Twisted Tale'. Basically, what we did is we chose a fairytale/ childhood story e.g. Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs etc. and we changed it. In my tale, I twisted Jack and the Beanstalk. Some of the changes I made included: turning Jack into a girl (Jennie); having the Giant eat the girl; instead of them living in a cute village, they lived in a modern city; and, I changed the beanstalk into a skyscraper. I found this type of writing very fun and would do it again if I could.

Hello, Year 5! In Rainbow class we have been doing a lot of fun stuff as well as learning. We are learning lots of new things just like you. There is a really fun game called 'Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza' and people, like me, have learnt card tricks. One of the best things about Rainbow Class is that we have teddies. Our teachers are Mrs McDonald and Miss Wilkinson. TAs are Mrs Richards, Miss Mann and Mrs Fretwell. Maria

To Year 5, during this tough time my respect for the teachers has grown. I know if I would not have been in Rainbows Class, the only thing I would be able to do is watch TV. The teachers have been the greatest help I have ever had in my life. I have made new friends but miss everyone at home. Yasmin

In Year 5, we play games when we finish our work. Hope to see you soon. Rehan

In this tough time, Rainbow Class is an excellent, magnificent class. We sometimes play and right now we are making our own game. Maths and English have made us much more intelligent. Aleah

To Year 5, we have missed you and when we are here we have loving, caring teachers. We love all of our teachers. We do work and art. Cyrus

Dear Year 5, we are so grateful that we are all having a good time and are making sure that we stay safe. Ella

In Rainbow Class, we have been doing lessons as well as playing games. We should see you in school soon. Joshua H

We have maths and lunch. We have nice teachers. Jack D

To Year 5, we are Rainbow Class and we do a lot of fun things. We have our own desks, we do dance on Wednesdays, PE on Thursdays and on Friday we have Golden Time. We stay apart from eachother because of Covid. Raul

Hello Year 5! Being at school is an awesome opportunity plus we have amazing teachers. At school, we have wonderful school days. We have been learning tennis in PE, learning fractions and drinking hot chocolate.

We have lunch in the classroom, not the dining room. After lunch, we play inside and then go outside. Eliza

Hello, we are having a great time. We are learning a lot and having fun. Our friends need to social distance and we have to wash our hands. Sabrina

When we read, we can escape to different places, learn about different people and imagine what it would be like to be one of the characters in the story. Unfortunately, we can't have that special time together at the moment, but that doesn't mean we can't still enjoy a story! Make sure to check the Distance Learning timetable as there are links to one of the Year 5 teachers reading a chapter of this term's book: The Explorer by Katherine Rundell.

The children have shown us that they are eager and ready to learn, and have made a fantastic start to the year. Although next half term we will be focusing on a new Learning Behaviour, the teachers are still looking to see the children continuing to show independence. They can do this by having their equipment ready for learning, bringing their reading book to school every day, thinking of exciting games to play with their friends at break times and in many other ways! Ask your children how they show their independence at school. We are sure you'll be impressed!

What a fantastic year! We are so proud of the Y5 children.

This year they have achieved so much, working harder than ever before. With the new learning behaviours, which they have worked on all year, to the impeccable behaviour during visits outside of school as well as around school the children have shown real maturity and have proved they can succeed if you try. During the summer term they have prepared themselves ready for a move to Y6 and impressed their new teachers.

The children have spent their summer term brushing up on their arithmetic and reasoning skills, some children improving their scores by 20 marks. Amazing! In writing, they have worked on their grammar, spelling and adventurous vocabulary skills ensuring their writing is descriptive and interesting to read. Reading has been fantastic this term, using Accelerated Reader to take the amount of words read over 10 million words. We hope they continue to read as much over the holidays, they can still complete quizzes when they finished reading their books. They have enjoyed learning about Space and thoroughly enjoyed our space visit.

As Year Group Leader I would like to thank all the children for being a fantastic year group and for making all members of staff extremely proud. Have a great summer and look forward to hearing all about your summer adventures in September!

We were lucky enough to have a Maya archaeologist and expert come to Stopsley to teach the children all that she has found in the central American rainforests. The children found out about the Maya number system, their calendar (which is similar to our 365 year calendar too), their impressive temples, their very tasty invention-chocolate!- and their beautiful writing system too. After this the children were able to study real Maya artefacts, which Dr Dianne Davies very kindly allowed the children to hold to see what Maya life would have really been like.

Year 5 venture to London.

On the 11th October Year 5 visited the British Museum. After a short coach trip we disembarked and made our way inside. The children were amazed at the size of the building and could not wait to go and find the Greek artefacts (although by the time we had got there the teachers had been asked several times when lunch was and it was only 10.30am).

Several children were lucky enough to use the iPads to record the days events (you will be able to see some of them below). Starting on the bottom floor we walked through the Egyptian room, where all the children wanted to stay, and into the first Greek room. Inside the children were excited to see all the Greek artefacts they had been learning about right there in front of them. Going around the children had activity booklets to complete and things to find out so were frantically searching for the answers.

Finally we stopped for lunch and the children were full! Hurray said the teachers no more questions!

In the afternoon we had time for one more room where their were lots of vases and small pieces of porcelain found on archaeological digs. The children were complemented by a member of the public on their behaviour which was a proud moment for us teachers. So well done Year 5!

Finally on the coach home the children were full of chatter and could not wait to get back to see there photos.

All the children have settled well into the routine of school and are looking forward to the year ahead. Over the last few weeks they have been lucky enough to have had a few events to start of the year. One of those was a visit by a theatre group who performed four different stories from around the world. Those stories talked about honesty, trust, relationships and respect, linking to our own values at school.

The next event was our NSPCC event where the children took part in a some sporting activities such as speed bumps, ball control, hula hoops. The children were sponsored to complete the events to raise money for the NSPCC, hopefully we will raise lots of money for them to support those children in need.

The next thing to look forward to is our trip to the British Museum which is on October 10th.

The children were shown a demonstration on how to make bread, working with the teacher on how to follow a recipe whilst considering the space needed, equipment and tidying away when possible (an often tedious task if left until the end).

The children then tasted a variety of shop-bought breads to see how textures and flavours differ. This inspired them to make something unique of their own.

In small groups, the children then applied what they had learnt and independently created their own buns; some included: raisins, choc chips, herbs, cheese and honey.

The verdict... You'll have to ask your child!
