Today the children have really enjoyed learning about longitude and latitude and have been able to locate different countries with great accuracy.

Year 6 have had a great time at PGL. We took part in lots of different activities which challenged us and enabled us to conquer our fears. A great time was had by all!

Last week in maths we were refining our division skills. This time, we didn't do any work in our books - instead we did our work on the tables! (We did make sure they were cleaned afterwards!)

Year 6 have been working tirelessly to put together our end of year production of Shrek Jnr. We are really excited to take our audiences on a journey from the swamp to Duloc. Next week we begin our dress rehearsals in preparation for our final performances. It will be an exciting and memorable time.

PSHE

In PSHE we discussed our feelings. We all took it in turns to talk about how we felt and then passed the string to someone else who felt the same. From this we created a web of feelings.

It was powerful to see that if you are feeling a certain way, you are not alone; others will often be feeling the same. We spoke about how we could support each other when we feel negative but also discussed how those negative feelings can be flipped to being positive.

A persuasive letter to our Prime Minister

This half term the children in Y6 have been working hard to combat one of the 17 Global Goals. As part of our Geography and English learning, we wrote a persuasive speech to Rishi Sunak to persuade and encourage him to listen to our ideas on plastic pollution.

Welcome to Year 6! The children have started the year superbly, showing a great growth mindset and determination to achieve. The adults have been extremely proud of the efforts each and everyone has put into their learning. This half term, our learning is focussed around the Vikings. In our first History lesson, we thought about our previous learning from Y3,4 and 5 in History and worked as a team to solve the 'Chronology Challenge'. We have to think carefully about the different important times in Britain and order them on a timeline.

In Year 6, we were lucky enough to have a virtual visit from Stew Foster, author of 'Bubble Boy'. In this session we learnt about some of his books and the writing process. He taught and helped us write a creative story from memory. In Year 6, we love our Thursday PE afternoon!

It gives us the opportunity to get out of the classroom and learn outside. We love that we are able to take part in PE as a whole year group and work and compete against other classes in Year 6. We have particularly enjoyed learning about what makes a great team, and how communication and encouragement are more important than the skills.

Anti-Bullying Ambassadors

Year 6 have kicked off the year with their first training session for the ABA (Anti-bullying Ambassadors). These children have taken a mature and friendly attitude to making sure everyone has a friend at break and lunch time. A big well done to everyone involved.

As we welcomed the children back today, we started the day with a PSHE activity where we discussed how we felt during lockdown. We learnt that if we felt a certain way, then other people in our class were probably feeling the same. This means we are here to help and can support each other.

Virtual Drumming!

Today the Year 6 Rainbow Class enjoyed a virtual drumming lesson with Billy from Luton Music Service...

We enjoyed nodding and clapping to the beat and pulse of the music and were amazed when they were shown the Junk Yard Funk. This taught them that you do not actually need a 'real' instrument to make music. This inspired the children to think carefully about recycled materials that they could upcycle to their own instruments. We look forward to learning the Junk Yard Funk song over the next few weeks.

Paying our respects...

Today marked remembrance day where we paid our respects to the fallen soldiers and service people in the world war. For most of us, we took part in a 2 minute silence; however, some children in Year 6 were able to attend the memorial service in the village and were asked by the church to read out the names of the soldiers from Stopsley Village. We were also able to lay a wreath at the memorial on behalf all everyone at Stopsley Community Primary School.

A big well done to the four Year 6 pupils who represented our school magnificently!

Maths is fun... especially when we can write on the tables!

This week, in year 6 we have been learning about division. We used counters to represent what was happening so we could see it visually. This really helped us towards the end of the week as we moved on to long division. It was also really fun because we were able to write all over the tables instead of in our maths books. We did ensure they were clean though before our next lesson!

Please do ask any one of us to show you what we have learnt in class about division. We can even do 4 digits divided by a 2 digit number!

The weather was so hot last week that we decided a socially distanced game of Dodgeball (with water balloons) was necessary! It was great fun! The children showed great skills whilst the staff avoided getting soaked!!

Hi Year 6,

Just a little message to say that we hope you are all well and are keeping safe. This week would have been your SATS week, which you have all worked so hard towards this year. Your teachers and the adults in Y6 couldn't be any prouder of what you have ALL achieved! It has been great to see so many examples of your work being sent to the email address for us to look at.

Remember, doing your work from home is a difficult thing and everyone is finding some challenges but just do what you can. It is important to have lots of little breaks as much as possible. If we were in school this week, we would have been doing lots of fun activities and things to keep our minds refreshed and happy - so do the same at home! Here is a little poem from the Year 6 adults to you.
