Rights Respecting School

Stopsley has a passion and commitment to being a Rights Respecting School and is currently working towards gaining the Unicef Bronze award.

The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. The RRSA seeks to put the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s ethos and culture, to improve well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential.

A rights-respecting school is a community where children’s rights are learnt, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. Children and the school community learn about children’s rights by putting them into practice every day. There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school. These are: wellbeing, participation, relationships and self-esteem. The difference that a Rights Respecting School makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole school body.

Our children create their own class charters, incorporating elements of the United Nations charter for children. Each class talk about their own charter of rights and how these rights also have responsibilities. The charter is agreed in each class and put into practice.  Throughout our school, we are creating a rights-respecting ethos which will emphasise our current values and helps us achieve our vision statement.

The RRSA puts children's rights at the heart of schools in the UK. To find out more about Rights Respecting Schools, please click here.
