In Year one we have used Julia Donaldson's Stickman as a launchpad to experience the process of planning and creating.  Across the three classes children first tried a basic creation involving just cutting, sticking and joining using a Stickman split pin template.  Then children used a variety of resources to create their own model of Stickman, finishing off the day by drawing and labelling a plan and then building a companion for Stickman.

This linked so beautifully with a Science focus for Waste Week on re-using everyday, packaging materials such as cardboard tubes alongside more traditional bought craft resources.
