Reading

At Stopsley, we believe that reading is fundamental to children’s learning and development. Reading allows children the opportunity to explore their imaginations, learn new facts about the world in which they live, broaden their vocabulary and share precious moments with their friends and families. Our children often talk about how they feel that their brain grows every time they read, and that they are able to escape to another place, lost in a world of imagination.

We teach reading through a range of strategies and within many different lessons. Explicit reading lessons are taught daily, as well as opportunities for shared and individual reading. During reading lessons, children are challenged to explore new reading skills appropriate for their age range, which include inference, prediction, summarising and retrieval.

We support the teaching of reading through phonics, enabling our children to become fluent readers. In Key Stage 2, our children use Accelerated Reader to check their understanding of the books that they read independently. Accelerated Reader also allows the children to choose books which are appropriately challenging for their reading ability.

Our recently decorated libraries are a perfect place to enjoy a book!
